PRO'S SECRET TECHNIQUES:

Four easy steps to cleaning any piece of glass, car window, or mirror.

  • Step 1. Prepare the window.
  • For the outside of the home there will be little preparation other than to remove the screens. Sliding door screens can be cleaned in place.
Inside your home you may want to put some of the detail towels or a drop cloth down to catch any drips. Our solution is non-toxic, but you may want to protect some of your furnishings from moisture.

  • Step 2. Wet the window.
  • The important detail to remember here is that the ENTIRE WINDOW needs to be wet with solution. Be sure to spray all the edges, and do not leave any dry places. In warmer weather you may need more of the Pro’s Secret Window Cleaning Solution to prevent the window from drying before you can squeegee it. After the window is wet you may need to use the scrubby to loosen any heavy debris or oil based substances.

  • Step 3. Squeegee the window.
  • Here are several techniques that help to eliminate streaks and spots that some encounter when using a squeegee.
The first thing you will want to assess is which direction you will pull the squeegee. Your two options are:

Top to Bottom Pull OR Side to Side Pull?
Your decision will be based mostly on which will require the least number of pulls.

    Top to Bottom
For the top window at left you should choose the top to bottom method as the glass panes are much taller than they are wide thus requiring less pulls and chances for a mistake.

    Side to Side
For the bottom window at left you should choose to pull the squeegee from one side to the other side, as the window panes are wider than they are tall.

Once you have assessed your window you will make a dry line at the side of the frame where you intend to begin your first squeegee stroke. This is done simply by taking a detail towel and drying about a ¼inch line either at the top or one of the sides of the window. This will prevent the squeegee from dragging water down behind it.

Pull 1. Dry your squeegge complety with a detail towel and place the squeegee in the dry line. With firm but not excessive presure glide the squeegee down or across the window. Be sure to keep your knuckles close to the surface as you move the squeegee.

Pull 2. Again, completely dry the entire squeegee. Each of the next strokes will begin in the dry line just like the first, but now you will want to overlap the squeegee about 1 inch to 1 ½ inches onto the dry part of the window. If doing a top to bottom pull you will need to pull the squeegee at a slight angle with the end on the dry portion of the window a bit lower than the other end. This will channel the water to the wet edge rather than onto the already dried section. This will be the method for as many pulls as you need until you have one left.

Final Pull. This pull will be just like #2. The one diffrence is that your squeegee may be much wider than the the water remaining on the window. If this is the case a quick spray to increase the area to within 1 ½ inches of the squeegee tip will prevent streaks on your surface.

  • Step 4: Drying and Touching up
  • The last step is to use the detaling towls to dry the edges of the window pane. Rotate the towel to find dry areas on it. A common mistake for our trainees is to use a wet detail towel and which will leave streaks around the edges of the window. You may also use the towels to touch up any spots or areas you might have missed on the rest of the window.

    Additional Techniques:

  • Combination Pull
  • The final technique is a combinaion of the top to bottom and side to side. This is required when a window sill or other object prevents you from pulling the squeegee all the way to the edge of the window pane. To do so would require moving your hand away from the window, thus using the wrong angle and increasing the probability of leaving debris and liquid on the glass.
Here you will bring the squeegee down to a point on the window that will require only one side to side pull. In some rare cases your side to side pull may have an object that prevents pulling the squeegee all the way to the edge. In these rare cases pull from each side and leave a very thin line of water on the window. This water line can easily be removed with a detail towel.

  • Mirrors- Windshields- Glass Surfaces
  • The above techniques will work for any glass surface that you would normally clean with a glass spray and paper towel method. For mirrors and car windows you won’t need to worry about a dry line. For horizontal surfaces you will find that you can lightly spary the surface with the solution and then dry it with a detail towel. A towel dampened with solution is also a great way to touch up any surface.
